The Flag Series is about reclaiming the American Flag as something personal and of the moment. My process is rooted in and inspired by protest actions taken with the flag, traditions of quilt making, and abstraction. The composition, color, and ritual customs associated with the U.S flag are fixed yet there is nothing fixed, static, or universal about the experience of citizenship and American identity; it is very murky. My method of making this series acknowledges that complexity with a set of invented rituals.
